FAIRFAX, Va.—Donald Tan, FRCS has been appointed as the new president of the Cornea Society. Dr. Tan will bring his expertise as a cornea specialist to the organization, which devotes its efforts to research about the cornea and external eye.

Throughout his career, Tan has accumulated substantial experience in the field. He is currently the medical director of both the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and the Singapore Eye Bank, chairman of the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), and professor of ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore http://www.nus.edu.sg/. Additionally, he has a portfolio of published work which includes 258 articles and 18 book chapters, holds 13 patents, and has been honored with awards from a number of ophthamologicla societies such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also president of the Asia Cornea Society, which he established in 2007, and the Association of Eye Banks of Asia, which he established in 2009.

“The Cornea Society strives to be an invaluable, global community for corneal experts,” said Gail Reggio, Executive Director of the Cornea Society. “Dr. Tan’s impressive breadth of knowledge and expertise, and his understanding of the issues that concern eye surgeons around the world, will help us meet this goal.”

Over the next two years, Tan and the newly selected board of directors will collaborate to work towards the advancement of the society’s educational and research initiatives. New board members include: Vice president/president-elect Christopher J. Rapuano, MD, of Cornea Service, Wills Eye Institute; past president David B Glasser, MD, of Patapsco Eye MDs, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; vice president for international relations Michael W. Belin, MD, University of Arizona; vice president for industry relations Terry Kim, M.D., of Duke University; and secretary/treasurer Marian S. Macsai, MD, of NorthShore University HealthSystem. Cornea Society Board of Directors Members at Large are Natalie Afshari, MD, of Duke University Eye Center; Anthony Aldave, MD, of The Jules Stein Eye Institute; Kathryn Colby, MD, of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; and Sonia Yoo, MD, of University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
