Independent eyecare professionals are usually quite careful about which labs they send their prescriptions to. According to 20/20’s newly released Wholesale Lab Usage Study, the factors that eyecare professionals consider most important when selecting a lab are lens surfacing quality (91 percent), lens coating quality (89 percent) and lens finishing quality (89 percent).

The success of an optical shop or eyecare practice depends in part on the support they receive from their lab. That’s why loyalty to a lab often runs deep. In fact, more than half of the 214 independent ECPs who participated in the survey said they plan to do at least as much business with the primary lab as they did last year, and 35 percent expect to do even more business with the lab in the coming year.

The following sample of survey data provides a snapshot of our key findings. To get the complete results of the 2020 Wholesale Lab Usage Study, place an order online at jobsonresearch.com or contact Jennifer Waller at [email protected].

20/20’s Wholesale Lab Usage Study 2020 was conducted during July 2020 by Jobson Optical Research’s in-house research staff. The sample of 214 respondents was derived from the proprietary Jobson Optical Research Database.

The 2020 survey was conducted online, and only eyecare professionals at independent locations (one, two or three affiliated practices) who use a wholesale lab for processing lenses or providing other eyewear products and services were qualified to complete the survey. Respondents to the survey were entered in a sweepstakes to win a $200 amazon.com gift card.

Three years of data is shown for trending purposes. The 2018 survey was conducted online in June 2018. 318 respondents at optical retail locations completed the survey and were offered a chance to win a $200 American Express gift card as an incentive. The 2019 survey was conducted online in July 2019. 289 respondents at optical retail locations completed the survey and were offered a chance to win a $200 amazon.com gift card as an incentive.
