We wanted a video presentation that would tap into signature aspects of 20/20 print and digital content, but also felt it would need to go beyond those established editorial fronts adding insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes, as the edit and art team evolve each month’s issue especially regarding our trendsetting forecasts and unique photo shoots. It was also determined that these first efforts needed to be as brief as possible and totally in tune to the highly visual delivery of 20/20 in all of its facets.
After discussing some concepts with our video producer Lindsey Hotaling at OpenReel it was decided that a preview of each issue’s main photo feature could be built around a trends narrative from 20/20’s Art Director Iris Johnson, further annotated by photos from our shoots on models and still life photos of featured glasses, and supplemented with simple iPhone video captures of those same sessions from a behind-the-scenes perspective.
Those momentary iPhone captures have actually become a most favored aspect of my gig here. Back in the day, I loved sneaking B&W pics of our photo shoots on my long-gone Leica M6 but this new adventure of simple and ever-so-short videos of eyewearers in motion at our shoots thrills me. I guess you might call it a career peak.
