Summary
The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant serves as a member of the health team in the treatment and care of patients and assists with tasks to support the medical office. The position works under the supervision of the clinical nurse manager. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of human growth and development over the life span, ability to recognize data reflective of the patient’s status and inform the Registered Nurse/Physician of his/her observations.
Clinical Responsibilities
? Participates and supports the health team in direct patient care under the supervision of a clinical nurse manager. Performs duties involving direct patient care as assigned by the RN/MD within the framework of JCAHPO and MPG policy and procedure.
? Identifies physical, behavioral, and emotional characteristics typical for the age group of the patient receiving care. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment.
? Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs. Uses age appropriate communication techniques.
? Performs a variety of patient care functions including, but not limited, to the following:
? Current and past Medical history ? Verify medications/allergies
? Past Ocular history ? Preliminary vision exam (with/without pinhole
? Motility, pupils ? Anterior segment incl. chamber depth
? Lens exam ? IOP
? Refraction if needed ? Dilation if needed
? Visual field testing ? A and B Scans
? OCT (at 95th street) ? Assist with minor surgery
? Patient teaching
? Assists with various minor office based ophthalmic procedures, as required.
? Notifies appropriate staff of patient’s status.
? Documents pertinent patient care information in the electronic medical record, and as necessary, paper record.
? Ability to make patient appointments in NextGen system.
? Provides instruction and information to patients, including preoperative and post op education.
? Acts rapidly and calmly during emergencies, initiates CPR and provides the necessary items called for by the team.
? Retrieves lab, pathology and diagnostic data from the outside physicians/testing centers as needed for appointments/surgery.
? Ensures that all pertinent equipment is sterilized according to schedule based on the purpose for and use of the equipment. Notifies appropriate personnel regarding any malfunction in equipment.
? Prepares the patients for visual examination by provider, assists as needed.
? Chaperones during patient examinations, as needed.
? Keep examination rooms neat and clean. Restocks exam/treatment rooms and monitors inventories of non-biological stock. Notifies manager when supplies are needed, but before running out. Follows up to ensure current supply levels are maintained.
? Ensures medication and treatment items are not expired. Keeps an organized sample medication inventory and log.
? Monitors physician schedule for accuracy of booked appointments. Confirms appointments and follows up with patients on missed appointments.
? Meets regulatory and annual health assessment requirements. Maintains current certifications and CME as required by JCAHPO.
? Performs other duties as assigned.
Experiences and/or Skills Required
? HS Diploma or GED required
? Formal training from a JCAHPO accredited school with current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
? Minimum of (1) year of experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
? Current BLS certification required
? Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
? Demonstrated ability to work independently
? Demonstrated basic computer skills including typing
? Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred
